When is a garage door opener worth repairing and when should it be replaced? Costs, age thresholds, and a clear decision framework for Northern Colorado homeowners.
Openers are among the more repairable items in a garage. Gears, sensors, boards, capacitors, and remotes are all individually replaceable, and a healthy unit is worth keeping.
But there is a point where repair stops making sense: when the part cost approaches half the replacement cost, when the unit lacks rolling-code security, or when the failures start stacking up. Here is how we make that call in the field.
Replace the specific part that failed — a gear kit, a sensor pair, a logic board, a capacitor, a trolley carriage — and keep the existing unit running.
A new opener with a current motor, modern safety architecture, rolling-code security, and typically battery backup and smart connectivity.
Under eight years old with a single failed component: repair, almost always. These units have most of their life left and the parts are current.
Eight to twelve years: repair if the part is inexpensive and the unit is otherwise healthy. If the logic board or motor is the failure, weigh replacement seriously.
Over twelve years: lean replacement, particularly if the repair quote exceeds roughly forty to fifty percent of a new installed unit. You are otherwise buying a new part for an assembly that will need another one soon.
Dead or misaligned photo-eye sensors. Inexpensive, quick, and unrelated to the motor's health.
A stripped plastic drive gear, which is the classic chain-drive failure and a well-understood kit repair.
A worn trolley carriage, a failed capacitor, a broken remote or keypad, or a snapped belt. All targeted fixes on an otherwise sound unit.
A burned-out motor. At that point you are rebuilding the core of the unit.
A failed logic board on an older opener, where the board alone can cost a substantial share of a new unit.
Any opener without rolling-code security. Fixed-code units from the early 1990s and earlier are a genuine security exposure, and no repair changes that.
Repeat failures — two or more service visits in eighteen months usually signals the whole unit is aging out.
Before spending money on the opener, have the door balance checked. An opener that strains, reverses, or fails early is very often the victim of worn springs, not the cause of the problem.
We see homeowners replace an opener, then have the new one struggle the same way, because the underlying issue was a door that had gotten heavy. Balance first, then decide on the opener.
Repair — Sensors are inexpensive and unrelated to the unit's remaining life.
Replace — The board cost is a large share of a new unit, and the rest of the opener is at end of life.

Twelve to fifteen years is typical. Units on unbalanced doors fail years earlier because the motor is doing work the springs should be doing.
