Insulated doors are described by what covers the inside face of the foam. A steel-backed door has a second steel skin, producing a true sandwich panel. A vinyl-backed door uses a tough vinyl or laminated film to cap the insulation instead.
Both are legitimate constructions at different price points. The choice comes down to how the garage gets used, whether things bump into the door, and how much stiffness you want.
Foam bonded between two steel skins. The interior skin adds significant structural rigidity, protects the insulation, and gives a clean finished appearance inside the garage.
Foam capped with a durable vinyl or laminated backing. It protects the insulation from casual contact and moisture at lower cost and lower weight than a second steel skin.
A sandwich panel is stronger than the sum of its layers. Bonding foam between two steel skins creates a composite where the skins resist tension and compression while the core resists shear — the same principle behind aircraft flooring and structural insulated panels.
That is why a steel-backed insulated section is dramatically stiffer than a single-skin section of the same gauge, and why it resists the twisting that eventually causes binding in the tracks.
Bike handlebars, rake and shovel handles leaned against the door, shelving installed too close, and children playing in the garage. Once the backing is torn, the exposed foam absorbs moisture and starts to degrade.
In a garage where the door face stays clear, none of this happens and vinyl-backed construction lasts a long time. In a busy family garage, it usually takes some damage in the first few years.
Steel-backed doors are the heaviest common residential construction. That is fine — springs get sized to the door — but it is another reason to insist on new springs specified for the actual door weight rather than reused hardware.
It also nudges the opener specification. On a 16-foot steel-backed insulated door, we default to a 3/4 HP or comparable DC unit rather than a 1/2 HP.
Quotes often say only insulated. Ask two questions: is the core polystyrene board or injected polyurethane, and is the back a steel skin or a vinyl backing. Those two answers place the door precisely within its price tier.
A quote that will not answer them clearly is a quote you cannot compare against another one.
Steel back — The interior skin survives contact that would tear a vinyl backing within a few years.
