Garage Door Safety: What to Test and What to Never Ignore

A residential garage door is typically the largest and heaviest moving object in a house. Modern openers have two independent safety systems for exactly that reason, and both can be silently defeated by a well-meaning adjustment.

This is the short list of what to test, how to test it, and which failures mean stop using the door today.

The two safety systems

Contact reversal: the opener senses resistance and reverses. Test it by laying a 2x4 flat in the door's path. The door must reverse promptly on contact. If it does not, the close force is set too high.

Photo-eye entrapment protection: an infrared beam across the opening, mounted no more than six inches above the floor. If anything breaks the beam while closing, the door reverses. Sensors relocated higher up — a shortcut some people take to stop nuisance reversals — leave a gap exactly where a child or pet would be.

Failures that mean stop using the door

A frayed lift cable, a spring with a visible gap in the coil, a door that will not stay put when raised by hand, a door visibly out of square in the tracks, or a door that fails the 2x4 reversal test.

Also: an emergency release cord that has been removed or tied up out of reach. That cord is how you get a door open during a power outage, and it should hang where an adult can reach it.

Kids, pets, and daily habits

Wall consoles should be mounted at least five feet off the floor and out of a child's reach. Remotes belong out of reach too — they are not toys, and children treating a door as one is how the worst injuries happen.

Teach the household to watch the door until it fully closes, never to walk under a moving door, and never to try to beat a closing door. Pinch-resistant section design has helped a lot in modern doors, but fingers still find gaps on older ones.

Security is part of safety

Openers from before roughly 1993 use fixed codes that can be captured and replayed. Rolling-code security has been standard for decades — if your opener predates it, that is a real security reason to replace, not just a convenience upgrade.

If you moved into a home recently, clear all remote codes from the opener memory and reset the keypad PIN. Previous owners, contractors, and past tenants often still have working remotes.
