Lost your remote or bought a new one? Step-by-step guide to programming a garage door remote for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers.
Whether you lost a remote, added a new one, or your old remote stopped working after a battery change, reprogramming is usually a 2-minute job. The process differs by brand, so below are the steps for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie — the openers we install and service most in Fort Collins.
If your opener is very old (pre-1996) and uses fixed-code DIP switches rather than rolling code, the process is different and security is much weaker — an upgrade is strongly recommended.
1. Find the 'Learn' button on the opener motor unit (hanging from the ceiling), usually under the light cover or on the back panel. 2. Press and release the Learn button — the LED beside it lights up. 3. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the button on your remote you want to program. 4. Release when the opener light blinks or you hear two clicks. The remote is now paired.
To erase all remotes (after losing one), press and hold the Learn button for about 6 seconds until the LED goes out — this clears every remote and keypad so you can reprogram the ones you still have.
1. Find the 'Learn Code' button and LED on the opener head. 2. Press and release Learn Code — the LED blinks. 3. Within 30 seconds, press the remote button 1–2 times until the opener light flashes or clicks. 4. Test the remote. Genie's Aladdin Connect smart openers can also be programmed through the app.
Homelink pairing varies by vehicle, but generally: hold your remote near the car's Homelink buttons, press and hold both the remote button and the Homelink button until the Homelink light changes from slow to rapid blink. Then press the opener's Learn button and return to the car to press the Homelink button once more to sync the rolling code.
Some newer vehicles need a 'repeater' for older rolling-code openers — if pairing fails, that's usually why. We can help diagnose this on a service call.
If your opener's Learn button is missing or unresponsive, the logic board may be failing. If a remote programs but won't work from a distance, the antenna may be damaged.
