Every garage door uses a spring system to counterbalance its weight. Torsion springs mount on a shaft above the opening and wind up as the door closes. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes.
If you are building new or replacing a full system, torsion is the better setup in almost every respect. If you have a working extension system on a light single door, converting is optional — but there are good reasons homeowners choose to.

It is worth it if you are already replacing failed extension springs, planning a wall-mount opener, or dealing with chronic balance problems. It is not worth it purely for its own sake on a healthy light door.
